What Jesus Really Meant

It’s easy to not take seriously today’s Gospel reading (Matthew 6:22-33). But are we hearing it correctly? Is Jesus really telling us that food and clothing will drop down from heaven? No, the key statements are at the beginning and the end! What comes in between is poetry!hqdefault

No one can serve two masters…. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor keep-calm-and-seek-ye-first-the-kingdom-of-god-5gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
